Identifying the Protagonist
Q: How do I know who the protagonist is in my story?
A: The easiest way to identify the Protagonist in a story is to identify the Story Goal. Once you have figured that out, then the Protagonist is the one who is the story goal's biggest proponent. The antagonist, similarly, is the story goal's biggest opponent.
If you cannot identify the Overall Story goal, it is difficult to identify your objective characters.
BUT...it is not impossible.
An archetypal protagonist represents both the internal motivation of "Consider" (weigh pros and cons), and the external motivation of "Pursue" (the drive to go after something). So long as you stay away from your Main Character's PERSONAL issues and look at pursue and consider objectively, you may be able to identify which of the players is the protagonist.
