Chapter 25 FREEDOM FROM THE SETTING/CHARACTER TYRANNY "Well, we like your script, but the budget's real tight, so we're wondering if you could change all those gladiator scenes from the Roman Coliseum to, say, an office building in Newark, New Jersey?" We all have heard stuff like that. And worst, at some point or other, we all have to concede and change the setting or characters of a scene while leaving its content, meaning, events and the flow of the story intact. That's one of the hardest parts of screenwriting, and it's risky to the point of ruining an otherwise solid and magnificent story. |
