Dramatica Users Group (DUG)
Minutes for August 12, 1998

The DUG began shortly after 7:00 p.m. led by Chris Huntley. The film analyzed was "A Room With A View." [See related article A Room With A View for a detailed story analysis].

On the whole, the evening went very smoothly. We had a little difficulty identifying the Objective Story throughline ("What's to become of Lucy") because it turned out to be in the Psychology Domain. Otherwise, the evening's discourse was quick and even.

As usual, Chris had prepared a "candidate" storyform for "A Room With A View" and handed it out early. This way we spent more time discussing the merits of a single storyform (including identifying storyencoding examples from the film) than haggling over trying to pick a single storyform.

Once it was agreed that it was a fairly solid storyform for the film [see A Room With A View storyform], we spent some time trying to determine the various objective functions of the characters in the story. It was suprising how many were identifiable. The only objective character that had even remotely archetypal characteristics was Lucy's fiancé, Cecil. Even though he had the archetypal motivations of the Reason character (Logic and Control), it was determined that he represented far more functions than an archetype and was therefore a complex character.

Next month's film, an episode of "Ally McBeal."

Note: The episode of Ally McBeal will be screened in the Users Group meeting beginning at 7:00 PM sharp. There will not be an earlier screening at 5:00 PM.
